NC922 | Two Covers from the Correspondence of Capt B. W. Justice. Both covers
from Forestville NC and show the Forestville postmark in both BLACK and
BLUE. The Blue Forestville CDS is quite scarce. The correspondence
between Capt Justice and his wife, Ann Justice, is extensive and
is housed in Atlanta at Emory University. An excellent pair of covers
both Very Fine. First Cover - CSA #12c (AD) Greenish Blue (4-Margin) tied by the BLACK Forestville NC CDS 18 MAR (1864). Brown coarse paper cover with full Military Address to Capt B. W. Justice Care of Maj W. J. Baker CS, Kirklands Brigade, Heths Division, 3rd Army Corps, Army of N. Virginia. Second Cover - CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the BLUE Forestville NC CDS 19 JAN (1865). Full Military Address to Capt B. W. Justice, MacRae's Brigade, Heths Division, 3rd Corps, Army of N. Va. (Petersburg). Benjamin Wesley Justice (1827-1871) was a pre-war teacher in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and later a pre-war farmer in Wake County NC. He entered service as a Lieut and Adjutant of the 47th NC Inf and was quickly promoted Capt serving as the regimental commissary. On 8/10/1863, he assumed a staff position as ACS (Assistant Commissary of Subsistence) to General Kirkland and later as ACS to General MacRae during the Siege of Petersburg. After the war, he and his family relocated to Raleigh where he engaged in business. Unfortunately, he suffered an accidental death 9/22/1871 when he fell through an open 3rd story hatch at his office while loading cotton bales. William J. Baker (1816-1882) a pre-war merchant and banker, mentioned on the first cover served as a Staff Officer with the rank of Major and was Kirkland's Commissary of Subsistence 1863-1864. |
