James Madison Perry (1840-1928) entered service as a Private in Co E 1st NC Light Artillery 9/1/1862. The unit was known as the "Wilmington Light Artillery (WLM)" and served in the ANV. He was paroled 5/10/1865 at Greensboro NC. After the war, he farmed in Thomasville NC according to the Federal Census of 1870. Alfred Moore Perry, the addressee, was Pvt Perry's father who is listed on the Federal Census of 1860 as a successful farmer.
