NC912 | CSA #2 Paterson (4-Margin pen-cancelled) and the Kenansville NC Double Ring
CDS 20 Sept (1862). Addressed to Mr. John A. Wallace Care of Capt Kenan
Co A 43 Reg N.C.T. (North Carolina Troops), Drewry's Bluff, Virginia.
Very clean cover and a nice stamp. Thomas Stephen Kenan (1838-1911), a lawyer by profession, entered service as Captain of Co C 12th NC Inf 4/22/1861 and transferred to Co A 43rd NC Inf 4/2/1862. He was promoted Lt Col 3/24/1862 and then Colonel of the regiment 4/21/1862. At Gettysburg, he was wounded (Culps Hill 7/3/1863) while leading his regiment in a charge and was captured as a POW the next day in the ambulance train retreating from Gettysburg. He was confined at Johnson's Island until exchanged in March 1865. After the war, he lived in Kenansville NC and served for a time in the North Carolina State Legislature and as the North Carolina Attorney General. The town of Kenansville was named after his Great-Grandfather, James Kenan, who was a Revolutionary War General. John Robeson Wallace (age 28) enlisted as a private in Co A 43rd NC Inf 5/5/1862. He was promoted Sergt-Major 12/14/1864 and transferred to the 38th NC Inf. He surrendered with his unit at Appomattox CH 4/9/1865. No further information. |
