NC911 CSA #68xu1 Raleigh NC stampless PAID 5 Provisional 15 OCT 1861. Addressed to A. M. McPheeters Esqr Care Thos L. Leftwich Esqr, Liberty, Bedford County, Va. Two color strikes with the CDS in BLUE and the PAID 5 mark in RED. Very clean cover. Signed "Dietz" on the back flap.

Alexander Miller McPheeters (1828-1903), originally from Raleigh NC, was a prominent merchant and businessman. No record of military service. Thomas Lumpkin Leftwich (1792-1872) from a prominent Bedford County family was McPheeters' father-in-law as Alexander M. McPheeters married Susan Frances "Fannie" Leftwich (1840-1914) in 1861
