CSA #11 (KB) (4-Margin affixed sideways) tied to cover by the RED Greensborough NC
CDS with an APR 1865 date. Addressed to J. J. Jackson Esqr, Pittsboro
NC. Period docketing at the left refers to the original letter which is
no longer with the cover "April 8 1865 Interesting Letter from Gov Worth."
Very late postal use as the docketing indicates that the letter was
dated one day before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Commercially made
cover which has a back flap opening tear, a few minor ink stains,
and some partially removed light notations on the front of the cover of
unknown significance.
Governor Worth mentioned in the docketing
was Jonathan Worth (1802-1869), a prominent North Carolina attorney,
legislator, and politician, who served as the elected North Carolina
State Treasurer 1863-1865. He was elected as the post war
Reconstruction Governor of North Carolina taking office in
December 1865. He served as Governor until July 1868. Since he was not
the governor at the time this cover was posted, the docketing which
certainly oppears to be period, must have been written at a somewhat
later date by the addressee or another family member. The addressee,
Joseph John Jackson (1817-1902), was a prominent attorney in Pittsboro
and was a son-in-law of Governor Worth as he married Lucy Jane Worth
(1828-1909) in 1848, Governor Worth's second oldest daughter. The
Governor had six daughters and one son. Some additional family history
is included with the cover. |
