Alexander Thom (1820-1899) received his MD degree from the Medcal
College of Virginia in 1841. Before the war, he practiced medicine in
Northampton County. He entered service as Acting Assistant Surgeon of
the 39th Va Inf at Camp Huger
(Va) 6/23/1861 and was appointed Surgeon 11/25/1861 and transferred to
Richmond. He spent the rest of the war at various hospitals and various
duties in Richmond as Surgeon-in-Charge and served for a time as the
Head of the Medical Examining Board. Banner Hospital in the address
(also known as General Hospital No 12) was in a tobacco warehouse
at 19th and Franklin Streets and also served Libby Prison. Dr Thom was
captured near the end of the war on 4/3/1865 while working in a
hospital in Richmond and paroled 4/16/1865. After the war, he went back
to Northampton County and continued to practice medicine. |
