CSA #11 (AD) (4-Margin) cancelled by a very light strike of the RED Raleigh NC small double circle CDS with a second stronger strike of the same CDS to the left with a JAN date. The red Raleigh postmark is not commonly seen. Light coarse brown paper cover address to Jno U. Kirkland Esq, Hillsboro NC. Very clean cover. Wx-Gordon Bleuler Collection. John Umstead Kirkland (1802-1879), a prominent North Carolina merchant, was the father of CSA Brig Gen William Whedbee Kirkland (1833-1915). Gen Kirkland was first Colonel of the 11th NC Inf before his promotion as Brig Gen in August 1863. He served with distinction and was wounded multiple times. However, the address is not in the General's hand. Another son, Capt John Umstead Kirkland Jr (1837-1914) served as the Adjutant of the 5th NC Inf.
