CSA #4a Dark Blue Stone 2 (not plated) (4-Margin with a small part of the adjacent stamp visible at the top)
tied by the integral 5 PAID Wilmington NC CDS 8 JAN (1862). This is the
pre-war Wilmington 3 PAID integral postmark which was altered to "5
PAID" to reflect the Confederate rate. Orange paper cover addressed to
Hon Thomas D. McDowell, Elizabethtown, Bladen County NC. Minor wear but
otherwise Very Fine.
Thomas David McDowell (1823-1898) was a
prominent Bladen County planter and a legislator as he served in the
pre-war North Carolina House of Representatives as well as the State
Senate. He served in the Confederate Provisional Congress as a
representative from North Carolina and was elected to the First
Confederate Congress without opposition. He also served as both a
pre-war and post-war Trustee of the University of North Carolina.
