The addressee, William Shepard Pettigrew (1818-1881), was the brother of famed CSA General James Johnston Pettigrew who commanded a division during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and was killed a few days later during the retreat from Gettysburg. During the war, William S. Pettigrew operated the family's plantations in North Carolina and was later ordained an Episcopal minister in 1869.
