Adversity use of a USA Star Die envelope ( the Star Die paid no postage) stampless cover with the small double circle BLUE dateless Raleigh NC CDS and BLUE handstamp PAID (no rate) Type B dated "Dec 17 1862" by period receiving docketing at the left. From the Pettigrew Correspondence addressed to William Pettigrew, Haywood, Chatham County NC. Minor back flap opening tear, otherwise Very Fine. The addressee, William Shepard Pettigrew (1818-1881), was the brother of famed CSA General James Johnston Pettigrew who commanded a division during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and was killed a few days later during the retreat from Gettysburg. During the war, William S. Pettigrew operated the family's plantations in North Carolina and was later ordained an Episcopal minister in 1869.
