CSA #1 Stone 2 Position 22
(very dry printing) (4-Margin with edge gum toning) affixed on the
reverse to seal the back flap and canceled with a full grid. The cover was
opened on the right, so the stamp was not damaged in opening. On the
face of the cover is a full strike of the Chapel Hill NC CDS
31 MAR 1862. Overall
College Cover University of North Carolina
Type NC-14a addressed to Mrs. C. V. Miller, Pendleton So Ca. The
original letter is with the cover written by a college student son to
his mother. The letter is four pages written on a Stars and Bars in full
color (10-Stars) patriotic lettersheet
Type F10-3. A typed transcript of the letter is included. Back flap
opening tears. Very clean cover and a very fine patriotic lettersheet.
This is the only combination I have ever encountered with a patriotic
lettersheet used in combination with an overall college cover.
The
writer of the letter is identified as University of North
Carolina student Harry Miller (1845-1864), son of
Henry
C. and Caroline V. Miller. The family was a wealthy prominent planter
family in South Carolina. Harry Miller is buried in Saint Paul's
Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pendleton SC. A lengthy tombstone
inscription says that he left the University of North Carolina in
August 1862 to join the war. He enlisted as a private in Co A 3rd SC Infantry and
was Killed-in-Action at the Battle of Cedar Creek (Va) 10/19/1864
during Early's Valley Campaign. |
