NC877 Stampless Soldier's Due cover with the Weldon NC CDS and arc DUE 10 handstamp Type E 5 DEC 1863. Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Miss Marian Ellis, Clemmonsville PO, Davidson County NC. Endorsed at left "From W. H. Ellis of Co B 49th Regt NC." Small part of back flap missing and just a little light soiling, but still a very clean appearing cover.

William H. Ellis enlisted as a private in Co D 15th NC Inf and was transferred to Co B 49th NC Inf on 1/9/1863. He was captured as a POW at Drewry's Bluff  (Va) 5/16/1864 and confined first at Point Lookout, Md. He was transferred to the prison at Elmira NY 8/16/1864. He survived and was released 6/16/1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
