Turned Cover -- 1st Use (inside)
from Wilmington NC
(stamps missing) to White(s)ville NC. Advertising Cover with a dark
blue oval shield "S. M.
West, Auctioneer Commission Merchant Wilmington NC." 2nd Use:
(outside): CSA #4 Horz
Pair Stone 3 Pos 32-33 (margin just touches at the top
center of the left stamp) affixed on the back to seal the back flap
with the Whitesville NC
CDS 21 JUL (1862) addressed to A. J, Butner Esqr, Salem NC. Very
interesting pair of the Stone 3 5c Blue Lithographs. The right stamp
(Pos 33) is a listed variety (joined CE of CENTS 4-3-v1), and
the
left (Pos 32) stamp has what appears to be a Shifted Transfer
very prominently seen in the TA of POSTAGE and the two white oval lines
mismatched at the lower left. No idea how this shift would have
occurred but seems most likely to be transient and
not constant.
It is not a misplaced transfer as the stamp is in the correct
position. Very clean cover with the upper right corner folded down to
display the advertising from the first use. |
