CSA #68xu1 Raleigh NC Handstamp PAID 5 Provisional with the small double circle Raleigh NC CDS in BLUE 7 NOV (1861) and the PAID 5 Control Mark in RED. Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Hon A. H. Arrington, Hilliardston NC. Period docketing indicates that the cover contained election returns from Nash County NC  (election of 6 NOV 1861). Archibald Hunter Arrington was from a very prominent Nash County family serving at this time as a local Nash County official. He was a member of the North Carolina secession convention and also served in the First Confederate Congress. Arrington's written note on the reverse of the cover dated 15 NOV 1861 indicates that Jefferson Davis and Alexander H. Stephens carried the election. Tally sheet enclosures also present with the cover. Very Fine.
