CSA #68xu1 Raleigh NC Handstamp
PAID 5 Provisional with the small double circle Raleigh NC CDS in BLUE 8 SEP 1861 and
the PAID 5 Control Mark
in RED
with excellent strikes of both marks. Addressed to Mrs Elizabeth Glenn,
Walker(s)ville Union County NC. Do not know who sent this cover, but
the addressee had two sons who served in Company B 26th NC Inf
(William H. Glenn and Robert S. Glenn who I presume were twins as both
were listed as age 22 in the 1860 census). William H. Glenn enlisted
6/5/1861 and died (presumably of disease) 3/6/1864. Robert S. Glenn
enlisted 1/29/1863 and was wounded and captured as a POW at Pickett’s
Charge 7/3/1863 and confined at David’s Island in New York Harbor until
exchanged 8/28/1863. He rejoined his unit and was wounded again at The
Wilderness 5/5/1864 and died of his wounds in Richmond 7/7/1864.
Another Glenn relative (George S. Glenn) also enlisted in the same
company 3/29/1863. George S. Glenn was wounded at Pickett’s Charge and
wounded again at The Wilderness. The 26th NC Inf (Pettigrew’s Brigade
of Heth’s Division) was a Pickett’s Charge regiment. Very Fine
provisional cover. |
