MS614 Stampless PAID cover with the BALLOON large single rim Corinth, Miss CDS (on the reverse) 2 MAY (1862) and handstamp PAID 5 Type C. Addressed to Mrs. Bettie B. Walton, Marion, Miss. Military endorsement at the bottom "from William Walton 36 Miss regt Company D." Some minor edge and corner wear but still a very clean cover.

William Walton (1816-1904) entered service as a 2nd Lieut in Co D 36th Miss Inf 3/1/1862. He was dropped from the regiment 5/11/1862 ( about 2 1/2 months after joining the regiment and nine days after this cover was posted). No reason given and no further service record. He is listed as a fairly wealthy farmer in Neshoba County, Mississippi, on the Federal Census of 1860 and owned 6 slaves. The Federal Census of 1870 shows him still farming in the same location but not nearly as wealthy as he was in 1860.
