CSA #11 (AD)
(4-Margin) tied by a partial strike of the Jackson, Miss
CDS with a MAY date. Dark brown corase paper cover addressed to Mrs.
Helen L. Oatis, Monticello, Miss. The addressee was the wife
of
Major Martin A. Oatis of the 22nd
Miss Inf who
most likely sent this cover. The cover therefore dates from
MAY
1863, which is an early use for this stamp, as the 22nd Miss Inf was in
the Jackson area at that time and was involved in the Vicksburg
Campaign. Also, Mrs. Oatis died some time in 1864. Major Oatis, a
lawyer by profession, survived the war and later relocated
to Texas. Minor reduction at the left not affecting anything, and a little left lower corner wear. Very clean cover. |
