Free frank signature at the upper right "Free Jno McQueen MC (Member of
Congress)". Addressed to Jas H. Witherspoon Esqr, Lancaster C H (Court
House), So. Ca. Cover with a little light staining and a few small edge tears at top center but still quite
presentable.
John McQueen (1804-1867), a lawyer and politician,
served contiuously as a US Congressman from South Carolina from
2/12/1849 to 12/21/1860 retiring from Congress one day after South
Carolina Secession. He later represented South Carolina in the First
Confederate Congress.
James Hervey Witherspoon Jr (1810-1865), a
judge and a politician, served in the Second Confederate Congress and
was also the Colonel of the 8th SC State Reserves. |
