Military "O.B." (Official Business) cover likely carried by a military courier as ther are no postal markings. Orange paper cover addressed to Officer Comdg 54 Va Regt ATenn (Army of Tennessee), Lieut Gen Lee Comdg Corps. Very Fine.
Lieut
Gen Lee refers to Stephen Dill Lee (not related to Robert E. Lee)
(1833-1908), an 1854 West Point graduate, who was the youngest Lieut
Gen in the Confederate Army and commanded the infantry corps Army of
Tennessee from mid 1864 to the surrender. That would date this cover in
late 1864 or early 1865 when the 54th Va Inf was assigned to Gen Lee's corps. The Colonel commanding the 54th Va Inf was
Robert Craig Trigg (1830-1872), a VMI graduate and lawyer by
profession. Col Trigg commanded the regiment from September 1861
through to the end of the war. |
