CS Navy related cover hand delivered outside the postal service addressed to Lieut John Grimball, C. S. Str (Steamer) Baltic, Mobile, Ala. There is no enclosure. Minor staining at the lower left, otherwise Very Fine.
John
Grimball (1840-1922), an 1858 graduate of the US Naval Academy and from
a very prominent Charleston SC family, was a Lieutenant in the
Confederate States Navy. He served on various Confederate vessels until
being assigned to England as a navy purchasing agent. Later in 1864, he
served on the famous CSS Shenandoah until the ship surrendered
in November 1865. Lt Grimball has the distinction of being present at
Fort Sumter when the first shot of the war was fired and on the CSS Shenandoah
when the last shot of the war was fired in June 1865 when the ship, not
knowing the war was over, fired on Union whaling vessels. CS Navy service: 1) Savannah Station (1861-62), 2) CSS Arkansas (1862), CSS Baltic (Mobile Squadron, 1862-63), CSS Shenandoah (1864-65). After the war, he studied law and became an attorney and a judge in Charleston.
