| MSC196 | Three stampless covers from the Furman correspondence -- 1) Milledgeville, Ga CDS with handstamp PAID 5 Type C 27 JUN. Addressed to Dr. John H. Furman, Manchester So. Ca. 2) Manuscript postal marking "Manchester SC July 4th " with matching manuscript "Paid 10." Adressed to Dr. John H. Furman, Milledgeville, Georgia. 3) Manuscript postal marking "Manchester SC Oct 16" with matching manuscript "Paid 10." Addressed to Dr. John H, Furman, Milledgeville, Georgia. The manuscript postal markings on the two Manchester covers are different handwriting. All three covers are clean. One has a missing back flap, one has a few back flap opening tears, and the third one is Very Fine. There are no enclosures. The addressee, Dr John Howard Furman (1827-1902) an 1845 graduate of the Charleston Medical College and a grandson of Richard Furman for whom Furman University was named, is listed on the Census of 1860 as a physician in Sumter District, South Carolina. He also practiced for a time in Milledgeville, Georgia. In addition to being a physician, he was also a successful South Carolina planter before the war. |
