LA414 Turned Cover -- This is quite a scarce Semi-Official imprinted cover with Military Courier use. The cover has been opened for display of both uses. The cover has a clean appearance but shows some edge wear which is most prominent at the lower corner.

First Use
(inside) - Semi-Official Imprint at upper right "HEADQUARTERS District of Western Louisiana" with "OFFICIAL BUSINESS" at upper left. Imprint is similar to CC WD-ZB-07 but is an unlisted variety as the lettering and spacing is somewhat different, there is no comma after "HEADQUARTERS," and the catalog listing does not mention "OFFICIAL BUSINESS" at the upper left. No postal markings as most likely carried by military courier. Addressed to Major W. R. Caton Comdg at Simm(e)sport (La).  The headquarters of the Confederate Military District of Western Louisiana was in Shreveport.

Second Use (outside) - No postal markings. Addressed to Major Lewis Maverick, Asst Inspr Gen'l, Camp Stevens, La. "Courier" at bottom left indicating that the cover was carried by military courier. Manuscript "Adjts Office 23 Tex Cav" at upper left and "OB" (Official Business) at upper right.

William R. Caton (1822-1903), a prosperous farmer from Red River County, Texas, entered service as Capt of Co A 23rd Tex Cav 3/1/1862 and was promoted Major 10/28/1863. After the war, he returned to his home in Red River County, Texas.

Lewis Antonio Maverick (1839-1866) entered service as Capt of Co E 36th Tex Cav in March 1862. He was later promoted Major and assigned to the staff of CSA Brig-Gen Xavier B. Debray, commander of the Texas Cavalry Brigade in Louisiana, as Assistant Inspector General in May 1864. That would date the second use of this cover in mid 1864. The 23rd Tex Cav was another regiment in Gen Debray's brigade. Major Maverick died in 1866 at the age of 27 and is buried in San Antonio, Tex. His cause of death at such a young age has not been recorded.
