CSA #62x3 5c Brown New Orleans Provisional Vertical Pair (margin just in at the bottom of the bottom stamp) tied by a full strike of the New Orleans, La
CDS 8 AUG (1861). Very thin paper folded lettersheet with the page
containing the letter removed. High quality paper with the large "J
Whatman 1857" watermark. The James Whatman Company of England was the
premier paper maker of the day and was the inventor of wove paper in
the 18th century. Addressed to G. Barnsley Esqr, Kingston, Cass Co.,
Georgia with routing "via Chattanooga" (over 500 miles accounting for
the double rate.) Exceptionally clean appearing cover with central
light horizontal and vertical file folds not involving the stamps or
postmark.
Godfrey Barnsley (1805-1873), the addressee, was a
merchant and cotton broker with business interests in New Orleans. He
was rumoured to be one of the richest men in the South at the time. The
remains and the ruins of his estate (Woodlands) in north Georgia can
still be seen today. |
