James Alexander Ventress (1805-1867) was a prominent Mississippi politician serving as a State Legislator and a State Senator. He was also a lawyer, inventor (measuring instruments, weapons, cotton machinery) and a plantation owner. He was instrumental in the founding of the University of Mississippi.
