LA332 CSA #6 Horz Pair (margins irregular) tied by the small double circle Shreveport, La CDS 14 SEP 1862. Addressed to Miss Em M. Reagan, New Salem, Rust County, Texas. “Favor to Shreveport of Mr. Simpson” at the lower left. This cover is from the same correspondence as Cover BE121 presented in the Bush Exhibit section and is known to have originated from Pollard, Ala. Research has shown that the sender of the cover was Douglas J. Cater (1841-1931) of Rusk County, Texas who married Emily Mary Reagan after the war in 1866. Douglas John Cater began service as a private in Co B 3rd Tex Cav 5/16/1861 and transferred to Co I 19th La Inf 6/29/1862 to be with his brother. At the time of this cover, the 19th La Inf was assigned to the Department of the Gulf and was in Pollard, Ala. Cover was handcarried by a Mr. Simpson (possibly a soldier headed home on furlough) from Pollard, Ala across the Mississippi and put into the mail at Shreveport for delivery to Texas. There is partially erased pencil docketing which is difficult to read because of the erasure and most likely is not period and not related to this cover. Backflap opening tears but a very clean appearance and excellent usage. $500.00
