LA300 USA Star Die Grid Cancel and the matching Donaldsonville, La CDS to the left 10 MAR 1861 USA Used in CSA Louisiana. Period receiving docketing at the left. Addressed to Mr. James A. Ventress Jr, Manchac, La (an obscure small post office in East Baton Rouge Parish). The addressee, James A. Ventress Jr (1834-1872), was a wealthy planter and large slave holder. He was later Captain and then Major of the 11th La Inf, a unit organized in July 1861 several months after this cover was posted. The 11th La Inf was captured at Island No. 10 in April 1862 and was not reorganized after the exchange. Minor sealed backflap opening tears but still a Very Fine appearance. $250.00
