GA1294 CSA #7 Horz Pair (margins touch left and bottom) tied by the Milledgeville, Ga CDS 18 APR. Coarse brown paper cover from the Furman Correspondence addressed to Mrs S. E. Furman, Manchester, So. Ca. Few back flap opening tears and minor small ink stains on the front. Otherwise a clean cover.

The addressee, Susan Emma Furman (1832-1890), was the wife of Dr. John H. Furman (1827-1902). Dr. Furman, an 1845 graduate of the Charleston Medical College and a grandson of Richard Furman for whom Furman University was named, is listed on the Census of 1860 as a physician in Sumter District, South Carolina. He also practiced for a time in Milledgeville, Georgia. In addition to being a physician, he was also a successful South Carolina planter before the war.
