William Dickey Mitchell (1839-1892) entered service 10/1/1864 as Captain of Co I 29th Ga Inf.
He was promoted Lt Col 5/10/1862 and Col of the regiment 1/19/1864. He
is listed as wounded at Chickamauga 9/19/1863 losing an arm, and
captured as a POW at Nashville 12/15/1864. He was confined at Johnson's
Island until released 7/25/1865. After the war, he practiced as a
lawyer in Thomasville, Georgia. Could find nothing on a Camp Lawton
near Savannah in 1861. May have been a short-lived Camp of Instruction. |
