CSA #5 (Good Color) (margin touches at the top) tied by a full strike of the Savannah, Ga Paid CDS 9 SEP (1862). Addressed to Mrs. F. J. Dorsey, Powder Springs, Geo. Blue paper Adversity Cover made from a printed legal document flapped for display. Small sealed edge tear at top left center, otherwise Very Fine.
Francis J. Noah Dorsey (1835-1887) married John M. Dorsey (1833-1917) in 1862. John M. Dorsey enlisted as a Private in Co F 30th Ga Inf 8/6/1862
and was later promoted Sergeant. Pvt Dorsey was the most likely sender
of this cover home to his wife as his unit was in the Savannah area in
September 1862. Sgt Dorsey is listed as wounded at Chickamauga
9/19/1863 and captured as a POW at Nashville 12/16/1864. He was
confined at Camp Douglas IL until his release after the Oath of
Allegiance 5/16/1865. |
