CSA #7 Horz Pair (4-Margin but close on the right and a small sheet margin on the left) tied to cover FRONT ONLY by the Dalton, Ga CDS 27 JAN. Semi-Official Imprint at upper right above the stamps "Quartermaster's Office Camp Pickens (Manassas)" (CC WD-QM-30). Fancy script "Official"
at top center appears to be handwritten and not part of the imprint.
Addessed to Mrs. Eliz P. McCants, Plains Store, East Feliciana, La.
Very clean cover front with a scarce Semi-Official Imprint.
Eliza
P. McCants (1818-1903) was the widow of David Alexander McCants (d1853)
of the large McCants plantation family of East Feliciana Parish in
Louisiana. The slave census of 1860 shows the she owned 16 slaves at
that time. Cover most likely sent by a relative in the army.
Camp
Pickens near Manasas was the major Camp of Instruction for soldiers
from Virginia and soldiers arriving in Virginia from other states
beginning in July 1861 into 1862. The imprint on this cover is
quite scarce. Unusual to see an imprint like this used outside Virginia
some time after the camp was destroyed during the Second Battle of
Manassas in August 1862. |
