#2 H&L (margin tight at the bottom right) tied by the Savannah, Ga
CDS with a JUL (1862) date. There is also an unframed grid cancel
applied but does not tie the stamp. The Grid is consistent with the
Grid used at Savannah and apparently missed the stamp when struck. The
stamp is the "Shooting Star" variety (CC 2-H-v5) from Position 14. CS Navy address to B. Henning, 2d Asst Engr C. S. Navy, Columbus, Georgia.
No information on the addressee. The Confederate Navy operated an Iron
Works and a Shipyard at Columbus, Georgia, on the Chattahoochee River
for the construction of river ironclads. Columbus is also the current
home of the National Civil War Naval Museum. Light coarse brown paper
cover with some minor light soiling but still has quite a clean
appearance. |
