GA1271 |
CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin but close left and right) pen-canceled with a partial strike of the GREEN Greens Cut, Ga
CDS 24 FEB (1864) to the left. Small but complete cover addressed to
the Probate Judg(e) of Tuscaloosa Co., Tuscaloosa PO, Ala. The original
stamp on the cover was placed on the back to seal the back flap. At
some time in the past, the original stamp either fell off or was
removed and would have been pen-canceled as there is no postmark on the
reverse. The current stamp on the front of the cover is a replacement
and is not the original stamp as it does not match the stamp outline on
the back. But still the cover displays very well. Greens Cut, Georgia,
was a very obscure CSA listed post office with a green postmark in
Burke County. This green postmark is very scarce. I have never before
seen a Greens Cut cover. In doing a search, I was only able to find
three additional Greens Cut CSA covers, one stampless and two with
pen-canceled CSA #7 stamps. The post office at Greens Cut was
established in 1854 and discontinued in 1926. Greens Cut (named for a
railroad cut), Georgia, still exists today as a small unincorporated
area. The original short one-page letter datelined "Greens Cut Feb 24th
1864" signed by a John W. Colson deals with the dispersal of money from
an estate and asks for the money as four per cent bonds. Very clean
cover. |
