GA1270 | Turned Cover -- Very clean cover which has been folded out completely for display. 1st Use - CSA 11 (AD) (4-Margin) pen-cancelled and the matching manuscript postal markings to the left "Berzelia (Ga) Augt 16 (1863)." Military Address to W. H. Little, Charleston SC Care Capt W. P. Crawford Co C 28 Geo Regt. 2nd Use - CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 5 FEB 186- (1864). Addressed to Mrs Mattie A. Inglet(t), Berzelia, Georgia. "In hast if you please" at lower left. Mrs Mattie Inglet(t), the addressee of the second use, was the wife of Corpl T.W.G Inglet(t) of Co C 28th Ga Inf who sent this cover to his wife. Thomas Wilkes Glascock Inglet(t) (1839-1910) enlisted as a Private 9/10/1861 and was promoted Corporal 8/1/1863. He is listed as wounded at Gaines Mills (Va) 6/27/1862 losing two fingers of his left hand. He was wounded a second time at Darbytown Road (Va) 10/7/1864 and was furloughed after his second wound. He returned home to Berzelia and is listed on the 1870 Federal Census as a wheelwright. Pvt William Henry Little (1840-1907), the addressee of the first use, is on the rolls of the same company as Corpl Inglet(t) on 12/31/1863. After that, there is no further military record. Pvt Little married Mary Elizabeth Inglet(t) in 1860 and was therefore related to the Inglet(t) family by marriage as his wife was Corpl Inglet(t)'s sister. After the war, he converted to the LDS church in 1888 and relocated to Ogden, Utah, where he is buried with his wife. William Peter Crawford (1832-1891) entered service as Capt of Co C 28th Ga Inf 9/10/1861 and was promoted Lt Col 1/20/1864. He had a distinguished war record with the regiment. |
