GA1268 Stampless Soldier's Due cover with a partial strike of the Savannah, Ga CDS and handstamp (Due) "10" Type N 27 MAR (1863). Coarse brown paper cover from the Alexander H. Stephens Correspondence addressed to Mrs. M. E. Stephens Care A. H. Stephens, Crawfordville, Ga. Endorsed at upper left "Linton A. Stephens, Jo Thom(p)son Artillery." Top back flap missing. Very clean cover.

Linton Andrew Stephens (1845-1894) enlisted as a private in the Hanleiter Company Ga Jo Thompson Light Artillery 1/28/1863. He rose through the ranks to 5th Sergt 3/15/1864. At the time of this cover, the unit was defending the coast near Savannah. After the war, Sergt Stephens lived in Crawfordville where he is buried. His tombstone identifies his CSA unit and refers to him as "Dr." Could find no documentation as to the meaning of that title as he is not identified anywhere as a physician. Could possibly be a church title. The addressee, Mary Elizabeth Stephens (1815-1868), was Pvt Stephens' mother. She was married to John L. Stephens (1815-1856) who was a half-brother of Alexander H. Stephens, the CSA Vice-President. VP Stephens never married and had no children. The extended Stephens family was quite large with complicated relationships.
