Address to John Brown, Travelers Repose, Va. Care of Capt W. A. Hawkins
12th Regiment. Travelers Repose is in Pocahontas County which would
later in 1863 be incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia. Minor reduction at the right where opened, otherwise Very Fine.
John Brown enlisted as a private in Co A 12th Ga Inf
6/15/1861. At the time of this cover, the regiment was part of
Stonewall Jackson's command in the Army of the Northwest. Pvt Brown is
listed as wounded and captured as a POW at Gettysburg 7/2/1863 and died
of his wounds (skull fracture) a few days later on 7/10/1863.
Willis Allston Hawkins (1825-1886), a Lawyer from Americus, entered service as Captain of Co A 12th Ga Inf
6/15/1861. He was promoted Major 4/10/1862 and Lt Col 1/22/1863. He
resigned only 2 days later on 1/24/1863. After the war, he served as a
justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. |
