GA1253 | Three Covers (no contents) from the Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown Correspondence -- First Cover - CSA #11 (AD) (margin touches at the left) tied by the Blakely, Ga CDS 1 FEB (1864). Addressed to His Excellency J. E. Brown, Milledgeville, Ga. Extensive receiving docketing on the face of the cover concerning the original contents written by Governor Brown himself in his distinctive handwriting. Second Cover - CSA #11c (AD) Greenish-Blue (margin touches at the right) on the reverse used to seal the back flap and tied by the Bainbridge, Ga CDS 10 MAY (most likely 1864). Stamp not damaged in opening. Addressed to Joseph E. Brown Governor, Milledgeville, Ga. Extensive receiving docketing on the face of the cover concerning the original contents written by Governor Brown himself in his distinctive handwriting. Third Cover - CSA #11 (AD) two singles double weight rate (one stamp 4-Margin and one stamp touches at right) tied by a very weak strike of a VIOLET CDS which is most probably Augusta, Ga. Milledgeville, Ga. Extensive receiving docketing on the face of the cover concerning the original contents written by Governor Brown himself in his distinctive handwriting. Very late use as the docketing dates the cover to MAR 1865. Sherman's Army bypassed Augusta on the March to the Sea and did not occupy Augusta. Millegeville was the Georgia State Capital during the war. All three covers are complete and clean. Governor Brown's handwriting is very difficult to read, and I cannot completely decipher the handwriting. Deciphering the full docketing on the three covers will be a challenge for anyone trying to read the handwriting but could yield interesting results. |
