Mathis, 12th Regt Ga Vol Co A, Jackson's Army, Richmond, Va. Second Use -- Stampless Soldiers Due with the BLUE Richmond, Va CDS Richmond Powell Type 5b and handstamp DUE 10 Type Q. Addressed to Miss Susan Harris, Buena Vista, Ga. Endorsed at upper left "J. E. Mathis Comp A 12th Ga Vols." A little light minor staining. Still a very presentable turned cover use with a military address and endorsement.

John E. Mathis entered service as a Private in Co A 12th Ga Inf 6/15/1861 and was promoted Sergt 2/6/1862. He died in 1864 of wounds received at Spotsylvania CH (Va) 5/10/1864.
