GA1243 Turned Cover -- 1st Use (inside) handcarried outside the postal system to Mrs May Anthony, Fort Gaines, Ga, Politeness of Capt Sutton. 2nd Use (outside) CSA #4a Stone 2 (not plated) Dark Blue (margin touches at the bottom) tied by the Fort Gaines, Ga CDS with a MAY (1862) date. Very heavy coarse brown paper cover which appears to be homemade. Military Address to Major O. P. Anthony, Rantowles (Colleton County) C. & S. R. R. (Charleston and Savannah Railroad) SC 51st Reg Ga Inf. Light staining at the lower left corner, otherwise a Very Fine cover.

Oliver Preston Anthony (1828-1873), listed as a teacher on the 1860 Federal Census, entered service as Capt of Co I 51st Ga Inf 3/4/1862, promoted Major 3/22/1862, and promoted Lieut Col  5/2/1863. He resigned 7/14/1864.
