CSA #4 Horz Pair Stone 2 Misplaced Transfers Positions 42-43 entered over Positions 12-13 (margins tight left and bottom with some soiling) tied by the Atlanta, Ga
CDS 23 JUL (1862). Very heavy coarse paper homemade cover with a faded
address to Mr. Saml Rutherford (the rest of the address is too faded to
decipher). The real importance of the cover is the stamps. Above the stamps are blue lines which identify these stamps as the misplaced transfers.
There exists a Block of 8 CSA #4 Stone 2 stamps where the top row of 4
are Positions 2-5 and the bottom row are Positions 42-45 misplaced
transfers entered over Positions 12-15 with the same two blue lines
above the stamps as seen in this pair. This block proves that this pair
on cover are the same misplaced transfers as seen on the block.
The Block of 8 was offered for sale by Siegel Auctions in the 2001 sale
of the Hall Collection and was listed at that time as the only recorded
item showing these misplaced transfers. This cover was only
recently discovered and recognized for what it truly is and is believed
now to be the
only example of these misplaced transfers known on cover. A very
important cover for the student of the CSA #4 lithograph stamps.
The image of the Block of 8 shown above is courtesy of Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries. The block is NOT for sale and is NOT
included with the sale of the cover. It is shown to prove that the
stamps on the cover are truly the misplaced transfers. I do not know
who currently owns the block. |
