by a partial strike of the small double circle Macon, Ga CDS (date not apparant). Blue paper Adversity Cover made from a printed but unused county court form displayed flapped over from the left. Military Address to Capt Geo. T. Bartlett, Monticello, Georgia. Routing instruction at lower left “via Eatonton.” Very clean cover.
George
T. Bartlett (1824-1885) was a pre-war lawyer and a member of the state
legislature and the state senate. He entered service as Capt of Co G 4th Ga Inf
4/25/1861 but apparently resigned a year later. His service record is a
bit sketchy as he is listed as captured as a POW 11/19/1864 at
Monticello, Ga (his home town). So he must have been engaged in some
sort of military activity at that time. In November 1864, Sherman's
troops went through Monticello in Jasper County, so that is possibly
when he was captured, but details are not given. He was confined at
Fort Delaware until his release at the end of the war. After the war,
he practiced law in Monticello and served as a county judge. |
