CSA #5 (margin tight on the right and stamp with good color with a little brownish tinge to the rose) tied by a full strike of the Atlanta, Ga CDS 14 JUL 1862. Addressed to Sam N. Fenn & Brother, Mossey Creek, Tenn with routing instruction at lower left "via Knoxville, Tenn." Period receiving docketing at right most likely refers to the sender and how to direct a reply "E. N. Spiller Care Maj J. S. Calvert, Retain until called for, Richmond, Va." Exceptionally clean cover.

N. Spiller (1825-1871) was one of the partners in the firm that
produced the Spiller & Burr revolver for the Confederacy in
Atlanta. He also served briefly as a Captain in 1863-1864 in the 2nd Ga Battalion State Guard Infantry
in Atlanta. Only about 1500 Stiller & Burr revolvers were made
and are much sought after by collectors today. John Strother Calvert
(1806-1870) was Spiller's uncle and a member of the Virginia House of
Delegates and was also the Virginia State Treasurer 1858-1867. He
served as a Major in the 10th Va Inf. No information on the addressee in Mossey Creek. |
