GA1199 |
CSA #12 (AD) (margin a little irregular at the right) tied by the VIOLET Augusta, Ga
CDS (date not fully apparent but receiving docketing at left dates the
cover to 26 MAR 1865). The Augusta violet postmark was in use late
December 1864 and through into 1865. Very late use. Sherman bypassed
Augusta on his March to the Sea, and Augusta continued Confederate mail
service into April 1865. Yellow paper cover addressed to J. Monroe
Ogden Esq, Macon, Georgia. Sealed back flap opening tear, sealed edge
tear top left center, and small edge tears top right. Still a very
clean appearing cover with a late postal use and a not commonly seen
violet postmark. |
