Three Covers from the Same
Correspondence addressed in the same hand from an unknown
sender originating from Doctor Town, Ga (very obscure use from Wayne
County).
CSA #1 Stone 1 Position 3 (4-Margin with a small upper sheet margin and a little gum toning across the top) tied by manuscript postal marking "Dr Town (Ga) Mar 8 (1862)." Addressed to Mrs S. E. Johnson, Hogansville, Troup Cty, Ga. Care of Mrs. Thompson, Corinth, Ca. Cover has some light foxing and staining and edge wear. Ex-Bogg. CSA #1 Stone 1 Position 34 (4-Margin with a transient printing flaw at right center CC 1-1-v7 and just a little edge gum toning) tied by manuscript postal marking "Dr Town (Ga) Mar 15 (1862)." Addressed to Mrs S. E. Johnson, Hogansville, Troup Cty, Ga. Care of Mrs. Thompson, Corinth, Ca. Part of top back flap missing, otherwise Very Fine. CSA #4 Stone 2 Position 31 (4-Margin) tied by manuscript postal marking "Dr Town (Ga) Apr 15 (1862)." Addressed to Mrs S. E. Johnson, Hogansville, Troup Cty, Ga. Care of Mrs. Thompson, Corinth, Ca. Light staining along the right edge. Dr. Town, Georgia (also spelled Doctor Town and Doctortown) in Wayne County was established in 1827 on the site of a former Native American village and named for the fact that a Medicine Man had lived there. The post office was established in 1857 and is a CSA listed post office and operated until 1967. The town no longer exists and is now extinct. Dr. Town is listed in the new CSA catalog, but I have never before seen a cover from this town. These three covers belong together. It would be a shame to separate them. |
