CSA #4 Stone 2 Position 23 (4-Margin) and CSA #5 (4-Margin ) used in combination to make the 15c 3x rate. To the left is the Cumming, Ga
CDS (Forsyth County) 7 JUN (1862). The stamps are manuscript
canceled with what looks to be initials "D" and "B." This
is consistent with the name of the Confederate postmaster of
Cumming, Ga William D. Bentley. Addressed to Messer E. Steadman &
Co., Lawrenceville, Ga. The cover is a little oversized at 7 3/4" x 3"
and is a Folded Letter Complete which accurately dates the cover. The
letter is a business letter dealing with the sale of salt. A typed
transcript of the letter is included. The folded letter is certainly
not heavy enough to account for the 3x rate. But that mystery is solved
by the first line of the letter "I enclose your certificate for
forty-eight sacks of your salt..." There was an enclosure, which is no
longer present, which accounted for the additional weight. Cover shows
some edge wear with a small piece missing at top center and at the
upper right corner. These small faults are unobtrusive with the letter
folded. Internal folds have been reinforced with nearly invisible
archival tape. The cover is otherwise clean and can definitely be
exhibited as it is. Very nice stamps. CSA Certificate 2006.
