CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by a full strike of the VIOLET Augusta, Ga CDS 5 APR (1865). Receiving docketing at left "Rc'd April 9th 65." The cover was received the day General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Va. Military Address to Capt J. C. Wrenshall, Macon, Georgia.
John C. Wrenshall (1834-1926) was a Civil Engineer and served in the
Confederate States Nitre and Mining Service. After the war, he helped
repair bridges destroyed by both armies. Cover has a little very light
staining and minor wear at the upper left corner. Still a very clean
appearing cover and a very late use from Georgia with a scarce Violet
postmark. |
