Columbus, Ga CDS stampless PAID 10 Type
B 21 MAR (1863). Light coarse brown paper cover addressed to Capt
W. E. Smith, Atty at Law, Albany, Georgia. The addressee was William
Ephraim Smith (1819-1890), an Albany lawyer who volunteered for service
as a Lieutenant in the Albany Guards at the beginning of the war. The Albany Guards became Co E of the 4th Ga Inf.
He was promoted Captain 4/28/1862. Capt Smith was severely wounded at
King's School House, Va 6/25/1862 (part of the Seven Days
battles)leading his company resulting in the amputation of his right
leg. He was discharged on 8/1/1862 because of his wounds. So this cover
dates after his discharge when he returned home to Albany. Capt Smith
subsequently became a successful politician and was elected to the
Second Confederate Congress representing Georgia and after the war
served as a US Congressman again representing Georgia. Cover with
a minor edge repair at the top left and is missing the top back flap
but still has an exceptionally clean appearance. |
