FL281 Stampless PAID cover with the Pensacola, Fla CDS 1 JUN (1861) (First Day of the Confederate Postal Service) and handstamp PAID 5 Type D over a mansucript "Paid 5cts."Addressed to Dr. R. M. Young, Cartersville, Georgia. Minor reduction at the left where opened, and the top edge refolded. Minor edge and corner wear, and a little light water staining on the back only. Very clean overall appearance and a Key Date of Confederate Philately.

Dr. Robert Maxwell Young (1798-1880) was a prominent physician in Cartersville, Georgia. He had three sons who served in the Confederate Army - 1) Dr George William Young (1827-1861) Asst Surgeon of the 14th Ga Inf who died of Typhoid 9/21/1861, 2) Robert Butler Young (1828-1864) had service in the 6th Tex Inf and was captured as a POW at Arkansas Post and confined at Camp Chase until exchanged in 1863. He rose to the rank of Colonel and was killed at the Battle of Franklin while serving as the Chief of Staff to Gen Granbury who was also killed at the same battle, 3) Pierce Manning Butler Young (1836-1896) served as a Cavalry officer rising to the rank of Major-General of Cavalry in the ANV (the youngest Major-General in the Confederate Army). After the war, he served in the US Congress and had a diplomatic career.
