Stampless PAID cover "Fernandina (Fla) Mar 5 62 Paid 5"
all in manuscript. Fernandina, Florida, is located on Amelia Island
just north of Jacksonville. Addressed to Thomas Tainter Esq,
Apalachicola, Florida. Thomas D. Tainter (b1824) is listed as an
Apalachicola merchant on the Federal Census of 1860. There are 23
covers listed on the Briggs Census of Fernandina CSA period covers.
Fernandina was occupied by the Union on 3/4/1862 and remained occupied
for the duration of the war. This cover appears on the Briggs Census
and is the only Fernandina CSA cover dated after the Union occupation
and the only one with "Fernandina" in manuscript. The cover has been
termed by Dr. Briggs as a post-evacuation cover (1 day after the Union
occupation) most likely posted at the Hart's Road Station (Florida
Railroad) which was on the evacuation route. The cover is illustarted
on Page 76 of Dr. Briggs' book on Florida Civil War Postal History.
Unsigned note on the reverse by Dr. Briggs to that effect. Cover is
clean but with sealed back-flap opening tears and a sealed edge tear
involving the "F" of "Fernandia." Period ink stain at the left edge.
