Stampless PAID cover with a full strike of the Warrington, Fla CDS 9 SEP (1861) and handstamp PAID 5 Type B. Above the handstamp is a manuscript "Paid 5" and the initials "W.S.C."
From the well-known Chapman Correspondence addressed to Mrs. Kate L.
Chapman, Talladega, Ala. Docketing at left in the same hand as the
address "Clothing & Board Mr Williams" Small reduction at the
top. Exceptionally clean cover.
Kate
Lettice Chapman (1839-1881), the addressee, was the wife of William
Smith Chapman (1833-1868) who at the time of this cover was the 1st
Lieut of Co D 1st Ala Inf.
The
regiment was organized in Pensacola in April 1861 and remained in the
Pensacola area until March 1862. On 3/16/1862, Lieut Chapman was
promoted Capt and transferred to Co G 31st Ala Inf
when that regiment was organized at Talladega, Alabama. Capt Chapman
resigned 9/26/1862 with no further service. In 1863, he relocated with
his family to Southern California. and worked as a citrus farmer. This
cover is from Lieut Chapman to his wife with his initials on the cover
at the upper right. There are a number of other covers in this
correspondence from this location in the same handwriting from Lieut
Chapman to his wife. |
