Stampless PAID cover with the Quincy, Flor
CDS and handstamp PAID 10 Type C 3 JUL (1863). Coarse brown paper cover
addressed to Mr. Wm E. Smith, Albany, Ga. Receiving docketing at the
left dates the cover to 1863. This cover is 1 of 4 Type C PAID 10
Quincy covers recorded in the Briggs Census. Minor back flap opening
tears and a small part of back flap missing, otherwise Very Fine.
The
addressee, William Ephraim ("Tete") Smith (1829-1890), was a Georgia
planter, lawyer, and politician. He entered service 4/28/1861 as a
Lieutenant in Co E 4th Ga Inf and
promoted Captain 4/28/1862. He was severely wounded at King's School
House (Va) also known as the Battle of Oak Grove which was the first of
the Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign 6/25/1862. His
wound resulted in the amputation of his right leg. He was discharged
from service 8/1/1862 due to his wound but recovered and was elected in
late 1863 as a Georgia representative to the Second Confederate
Congress. After the war, he continued the practice of law. He was
elected to the US House of Representatives 1875-1881 and served later
in the Georgia State Senate. This cover is from the time after his
discharge from the army while he was home in Albany, Georgia,
recovering from his amputation. |
