Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with the Quincy, Flor CDS and handstamp DUE 10
Type D 15 JUN (1863). Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Mrs.
Margarett Simonton, Lawrenceville, Ga. Endorsed across the top "from private Simonton Company E Evans Regmt." This cover is the listng cover for the Type D handstamp and the cover is illustrated in the CSA catalog. This
cover is 1 of only 2 Type D Soldiers DUE Quincy covers recorded in the
Briggs Census and is illustrated on Page 214 in the Briggs book on
Florida Civil War postal history. Minor back flap opening tear, otherwise Very Fine. Ex-Kaufmann.
The cover was sent by Pvt Robert Simonton (1821-1863) home to his wife. Robert Simonton entered service as a private in Co E 64th Ga Inf
commanded by Col John W. Evans on 3/1/1863. The regiment was assigned
to the Department of Middle Florida before transferring to the ANV in
July 1864. Pvt Simonton Died of Disease in Tallahassee, Florida,
12/27/1863 and is buried in the Confederate Section of the Old City
Cemetery in Tallahassee.
John W. Evans (1827-1864), a lawyer by profession, entered service as Captain of Co G 1st Ga Inf 3/18/1861 and was elected Colonel of the 64th Ga Inf 5/26/1863,
a regiment that he helped raise. Col Evans was wounded in Florida at
the Battle of Olustee in February 1864. He commanded the regiment
during the transfer to the ANV and is reported as Killed-in-Action at
the Siege of Petersburg Battle of the Crater 7/30/1864. He is buried in
an unmarked grave in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia. |
